Two of England’s most underperforming Premier League sides this season—Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur—have booked a surprise meeting in the UEFA Europa League final, set for May 21 in Bilbao, Spain.

Despite dismal domestic form—United sit 15th and Spurs 16th in the Premier League—both clubs cruised through their semifinal ties to earn a shot at salvaging their seasons with European silverware. The stakes are high: a Europa League title not only brings prestige but also automatic qualification for next season’s lucrative Champions League, offering a crucial financial and competitive lifeline.

United, holding a 3-0 advantage from the first leg, overcame an early setback at Old Trafford to beat their opponents 4-1, thanks to goals from Casemiro, Rasmus Højlund, and a double from Mason Mount. Head coach Ruben Amorim attributed the team’s success in Europe to the different style of play compared to the Premier League, noting, “We are more comfortable in this kind of game.”

Tottenham also sealed their place with a composed 2-0 win away at Norway’s Bodø/Glimt, building on a 3-1 first-leg lead. Goals from Dominic Solanke and Pedro Porro capped the victory. For manager Ange Postecoglou, the final offers a chance to deliver Spurs’ first trophy since 2008 and their first European title since 1984.

It’s brilliant. You don’t get these opportunities often,” said Postecoglou. “We want to make the most of it.”

The final promises not only redemption for both clubs but also a rare high point in otherwise turbulent campaigns. The winner will not just lift a trophy, but also gain a vital reset button for the future.
