If Siri Ever Activated Without Your Intent, You Could Be Owed Money by Apple
If your Apple device’s Siri ever turned on by accident and listened in on a private conversation, you might be eligible for a payout from Apple — part of a proposed $95 million class action settlement.
The lawsuit claims that Apple’s Siri voice assistant was sometimes unintentionally activated, potentially capturing sensitive conversations without users’ knowledge. Plaintiffs allege that these private conversations were later used for targeted advertising. Apple has denied all allegations, stating it has never used Siri data for advertising, never created marketing profiles using it, and never sold such data.
Who’s Eligible?
To qualify for compensation, you must:
-
Have owned or purchased a Siri-enabled Apple device in the U.S. between September 17, 2014 and December 31, 2024.
-
Have experienced at least one unintentional Siri activation during a private conversation.
Siri was introduced in 2011 and is now integrated across Apple’s ecosystem, including iPhones, iPads, Macs, Apple Watches, Apple TV devices, and HomePods. Siri is typically activated by saying “Hey Siri” or pressing and holding the iPhone’s side button.
Concerns about privacy aren’t new. In 2019, reports from The Guardian, Bloomberg, and Belgian outlet VRT revealed that human reviewers working on Siri, Alexa, and Google Assistant could hear recordings of users’ private conversations. That news sparked broader scrutiny of how tech companies handle voice data.
Apple responded publicly in January, stating, “Apple has never used Siri data to build marketing profiles, never made it available for advertising, and never sold it to anyone for any purpose.” The company emphasized that it processes many Siri requests directly on users’ devices to protect privacy and limits the amount of data sent to its servers.
