Tibetan and Himalayan Communities Celebrate 90th Birthday of His Holiness the Dalai Lama in New York

In a powerful expression of unity, devotion, and gratitude, the Tibetan Community of New York and New Jersey, in collaboration with the wider Himalayan Buddhist community, will host a special multi-day celebration marking the 90th birthday of His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama. This milestone year has been dedicated as the “Year of Compassion,” reflecting the Dalai Lama’s lifelong teachings of love, peace, and universal responsibility.

The celebration will unfold across multiple days of major events in New York:

• Saturday, July 5 – Street Events
  The festivities will begin with vibrant cultural performances, traditional Tibetan and Himalayan communities’ music and dance, and community gatherings. These events will showcase the rich heritage of the Himalayan region and celebrate the enduring spirit of Tibetan identity and culture through artistic expression.

• Sunday, July 6 – Official Ceremonies
  The central day of the celebration will feature long-life prayers, blessings from esteemed Buddhist teachers, and formal tributes from community leaders. The program will highlight His Holiness’s global legacy of compassion, interfaith dialogue, and commitment to nonviolence and ethical living. Tibetan, Sherpa, Bhutanese, and Nepali communities will join together in offering their heartfelt reverence and prayers.

• Saturday, July 19 – Trungkar Picnic
  The final event will be a joyful community picnic that brings families and friends together to share food, games, songs, and fellowship. The Trungkar celebration reflects the values of harmony, generosity, and togetherness that His Holiness has consistently promoted throughout his life.
