United Sherpa Association Celebrates 30 Years of Unity, Service, and Cultural Preservation
Thirty years ago, on a beautiful spring day in New York City’s Central Park, a small group of Sherpa immigrants gathered beneath the shade of trees, united by a shared vision for the future. Far from the towering peaks of the Himalayas, they carried with them not only memories of their homeland but also the enduring values that had long sustained the Sherpa community, unity, compassion, mutual support, and a profound sense of collective responsibility. What began as a humble gathering of friends and community members soon evolved into a lasting institution. Inspired by their common purpose and commitment to preserving their cultural heritage while supporting fellow Sherpas in America, they formally registered the organization on June 3, 1996, laying the foundation for what would become one of the most vibrant and respected organizations in the United States.
At the time, the Sherpa population in New York was still relatively small. Many had recently arrived in America seeking new opportunities while working tirelessly to establish themselves and provide for their families. Life as immigrants was often challenging. They labored long hours, adapted to a new language and culture, and navigated the uncertainties of a new country. Yet amid these challenges, they understood that preserving their identity, traditions, and sense of community would be essential not only for themselves but also for future generations.
From that historic gathering emerged the United Sherpa Association (USA), Inc., an organization founded on the principles of unity, service, and cultural preservation. Over the next three decades, that dream steadily took shape.
In its early years, the Association focused on bringing people together through social and recreational activities. Volleyball tournaments became one of the organization’s first and most successful initiatives, drawing participants and spectators from across New York and neighboring states. As the community continued to grow, soccer, basketball, and golf tournaments were added to the annual calendar. These events became much more than sporting competitions. They became celebrations of friendship, community, and belonging. For many families, they provided an opportunity to reconnect with old friends, meet new community members, and strengthen the bonds that held the Sherpa community together.
Alongside these activities, the United Sherpa Association emerged as a guardian of Sherpa culture and heritage. Through annual Losar celebrations, cultural performances, traditional dances, religious ceremonies, youth programs, and educational initiatives, the organization has helped preserve the language, customs, values, and spiritual traditions of the Sherpa people. The building also became the home of the Sherpa Kyidug Monastery, an important spiritual and cultural institution that serves the community’s religious needs. Through regular prayers, Buddhist teachings, memorial services, cultural observances, and special ceremonies, the monastery has become a sacred place where community members gather to preserve and practice their spiritual traditions. For many Sherpa families, it represents a bridge between the ancient wisdom of the Himalayas and life in modern America, ensuring that the community’s spiritual heritage remains alive and accessible for future generations.
Together, the community building and the Sherpa Kyidug Monastery stand as enduring symbols of the Sherpa community’s commitment not only to preserving its cultural identity but also to nurturing the spiritual values of compassion, wisdom, and service that have long guided Sherpa life.
Today, the Wallkill property serves as a sacred gathering place where community members come together for religious ceremonies, cultural celebrations, family gatherings, and community events.
