Thirty years ago, on a beautiful spring day in New York City’s Central Park, a small group of Sherpa immigrants gathered beneath the shade of trees, united by a shared vision for the future. Far from the towering peaks of the Himalayas, they carried with them not only memories of their homeland but also the enduring values that had long sustained the Sherpa community, unity, compassion, mutual support, and a profound sense of collective responsibility. What began as a humble gathering of friends and community members soon evolved into a lasting institution. Inspired by their common purpose and commitment to preserving their cultural heritage while supporting fellow Sherpas in America, they formally registered the organization on June 3, 1996, laying the foundation for what would become one of the most vibrant and respected organizations in the United States.

At the time, the Sherpa population in New York was still relatively small. Many had recently arrived in America seeking new opportunities while working tirelessly to establish themselves and provide for their families. Life as immigrants was often challenging. They labored long hours, adapted to a new language and culture, and navigated the uncertainties of a new country. Yet amid these challenges, they understood that preserving their identity, traditions, and sense of community would be essential not only for themselves but also for future generations.

From that historic gathering emerged the United Sherpa Association (USA), Inc., an organization founded on the principles of unity, service, and cultural preservation. What began as a simple conversation among a handful of community members has grown into one of the most respected and dynamic Sherpa organizations in the United States. Today, as the Association celebrates its thirtieth anniversary, it stands as a powerful testament to the vision of its founders and to the strength that emerges when a community comes together with a shared purpose. Three decades later, the organization continues to serve as a bridge between heritage and future generations, embodying the enduring spirit, resilience, and generosity of the Sherpa people.

The founders envisioned an organization that would serve as a home away from home for Sherpas living in America. They dreamed of creating a place where families could come together, where cultural traditions could be preserved, and where community members could support one another through both joyful and difficult moments. Over the next three decades, that dream steadily took shape.

In its early years, the Association focused on bringing people together through social and recreational activities. Volleyball tournaments became one of the organization’s first and most successful initiatives, drawing participants and spectators from across New York and neighboring states. As the community continued to grow, soccer, basketball, and golf tournaments were added to the annual calendar. These events became much more than sporting competitions. They became celebrations of friendship, community, and belonging. For many families, they provided an opportunity to reconnect with old friends, meet new community members, and strengthen the bonds that held the Sherpa community together.

Alongside these activities, the United Sherpa Association emerged as a guardian of Sherpa culture and heritage. Through annual Losar celebrations, cultural performances, traditional dances, religious ceremonies, youth programs, and educational initiatives, the organization has helped preserve the language, customs, values, and spiritual traditions of the Sherpa people. These efforts have played a vital role in ensuring that younger generations born and raised in America remain connected to their ancestral roots while embracing the opportunities of their new homeland.

Education has also remained a central part of the Association’s mission. Recognizing that education has the power to transform lives, the organization established scholarship programs for deserving students in Nepal. Through these scholarships, young people from economically disadvantaged families have been given opportunities to continue their education and pursue their dreams. By investing in students, the Sherpa community in America has maintained a meaningful connection with Nepal while helping build a brighter future for future generations. The scholarship program reflects the belief that true service knows no borders and that empowering young minds is one of the most meaningful contributions a community can make.

The spirit of compassion and service has been a defining characteristic of the United Sherpa Association throughout its history. Whenever communities have faced hardship, members have come together to provide assistance and support. Following the devastating earthquake that struck Nepal in 2015, the Association mobilized volunteers, organized fundraising campaigns, and assisted affected communities. Community members united around a common purpose, demonstrating the generosity and resilience that have long characterized the Sherpa people.

Closer to home, the Association has supported individuals and families facing personal hardships and emergencies. During the COVID-19 pandemic, volunteers distributed food, essential supplies, and critical information to vulnerable households. The organization also participated in numerous public service initiatives, including support for the NYC Census campaign, the NYC ID program, and community outreach efforts designed to help immigrant families access important services and resources.

Among the most significant achievements in the Association’s thirty-year history has been the acquisition of its own community building in Elmhurst, Queens. Situated in the heart of one of the largest Himalayan communities in the United States, the building serves as a center for meetings, educational programs, cultural events, religious activities, and community services. More than a physical structure, it stands as a symbol of the Sherpa community’s growth, stability, and determination to establish a permanent presence in New York City.

The building also became the home of the Sherpa Kyidug Monastery, an important spiritual and cultural institution that serves the community’s religious needs. Through regular prayers, Buddhist teachings, memorial services, cultural observances, and special ceremonies, the monastery has become a sacred place where community members gather to preserve and practice their spiritual traditions. For many Sherpa families, it represents a bridge between the ancient wisdom of the Himalayas and life in modern America, ensuring that the community’s spiritual heritage remains alive and accessible for future generations.

Together, the community building and the Sherpa Kyidug Monastery stand as enduring symbols of the Sherpa community’s commitment not only to preserving its cultural identity but also to nurturing the spiritual values of compassion, wisdom, and service that have long guided Sherpa life.

Today, the Wallkill property serves as a sacred gathering place where community members come together for religious ceremonies, cultural celebrations, family gatherings, and community events. It is a place where traditions are preserved, memories are created, and future generations can connect with the heritage of their ancestors. The property symbolizes not only the achievements of the present generation but also its commitment to preserving Sherpa culture, values, and spiritual traditions for generations yet to come.

The success of the United Sherpa Association is the result of countless individuals who have generously contributed their time, energy, resources, and leadership over the past three decades. Founders, presidents, trustees, executive committee members, lifetime members, volunteers, donors, and supporters have all played an essential role in building and sustaining the organization. Their collective efforts transformed a gathering in Central Park into a thriving institution that continues to serve thousands of people today.

As the Association celebrates this historic milestone, it also looks toward the future. The challenges facing future generations may be different from those encountered by the founders thirty years ago, but the values that inspired the creation of the organization remain unchanged. Unity, compassion, service, cultural preservation, and community responsibility continue to guide the Association’s mission.

Thirty years after its founding, the United Sherpa Association stands as a powerful testament to the strength of a community working together toward a common purpose. Its story reflects not only the journey of Sherpas in America but also the enduring power of volunteerism, collective action, and shared vision.

As community members celebrate this remarkable anniversary, they honor the pioneers who laid the foundation, express gratitude to those who carried the mission forward, and look ahead with confidence and hope. The next chapter of the United Sherpa Association’s history remains unwritten, but if the past thirty years are any indication, its future will continue to be defined by service, leadership, cultural pride, and an unwavering commitment to the community it serves.

Happy 30th Anniversary to the United Sherpa Association.

May its legacy of unity, compassion, and service continue to inspire future generations, and may the vision first imagined beneath the trees of Central Park continue to flourish for many years to come.
