Despite relentless monsoon rains and heavy mist blanketing the Himalayan foothills, thousands of Tibetans and global supporters gathered in Dharamshala, India, on Sunday to mark the 90th birthday of His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama, the revered spiritual leader, Nobel Peace Laureate, and lifelong advocate for nonviolence and Tibetan autonomy under Chinese rule.

The celebration took place at the Tsuklakhang Tibetan Buddhist complex, where crowds lined the streets from dawn, dressed in traditional finery, hoping for a glimpse of the Dalai Lama. Inside the temple grounds, masked dancers in colorful robes spun gracefully to the deep sounds of Tibetan horns and drums as the Dalai Lama was gently escorted in by his attendants.

Indian police managed crowd control as the temple quickly reached full capacity, with hundreds left outside in prayer and quiet anticipation. Indian government ministers joined the ceremony alongside longtime Tibetan ally and Hollywood actor Richard Gere, who offered personal reflections before respectfully kissing the Dalai Lama’s hand.

As birthday prayers echoed through the temple, the Dalai Lama was presented with a tall layered cake adorned with fresh fruit and a white lily. Musical performances by Tibetan artists added to the atmosphere of joy and reverence.

The event marked the culmination of a weeklong series of cultural and spiritual activities, drawing Tibetan exiles and international pilgrims from across the globe. Namgyal Dorjee Gongpa, who traveled from New Jersey with his wife and three sons, said, “Every year, we come here so our children born in a foreign country stay rooted in Tibetan values. Celebrating His Holiness’s 90th birthday here is both personal and profound.”

In a birthday message shared on X (formerly Twitter), the Dalai Lama emphasized the importance of cultivating a compassionate heart, inner peace, and religious harmony. He reaffirmed his commitment to promoting human values, preserving Tibetan culture, and sharing ancient Indian wisdom with the world.

At a special long life prayer ceremony on Saturday, he reassured devotees that he was in excellent physical condition and humorously extended his longevity aspiration from 110 to 130 years. As he exited Sunday’s event, he smiled and swayed gently to live Tibetan music before departing in his familiar golf cart.

But amid the joyful celebration, a pressing issue resurfaced: the question of the Dalai Lama’s reincarnation.

In a video message to Tibetan spiritual leaders released earlier in the week, the Dalai Lama declared that his institution will continue after his death and that only his office has the legitimate authority to recognize his successor. “No one else has any such authority to interfere in this matter,” he said, firmly rejecting China’s claim that it holds the power to appoint the next Dalai Lama.

Tibetan Buddhists believe that enlightened masters like the Dalai Lama can consciously choose their rebirth through compassion and prayer. However, Beijing continues to insist that any future reincarnation must follow state sanctioned procedures, a strategy widely seen as part of its campaign to sinicize Tibetan Buddhism and weaken Tibetan identity.

The Dalai Lama has said that his next reincarnation will be born in a free country outside of Chinese control and has urged followers to reject any Beijing appointed figure.

Despite Beijing’s persistent efforts to delegitimize him as a separatist, the Dalai Lama has long championed a peaceful Middle Way approach that seeks genuine autonomy for Tibet within China, not independence. His unwavering commitment to nonviolence earned him the Nobel Peace Prize in 1989.

Global support for the Dalai Lama’s values was clearly on display during the birthday celebration. A tribute video compiled by Tibet TV featured heartfelt messages from current and former world leaders, artists, and lawmakers.

Former US President Barack Obama, a close friend of the Dalai Lama, called him “the youngest 90 year old I know” and said, “You’ve shown the world what it means to lead with compassion and to stand up for freedom and dignity. Not bad for someone who humbly calls himself a simple Buddhist monk.”

Former Presidents Bill Clinton and George W. Bush also paid tribute. Clinton praised the Dalai Lama’s moral clarity and steadfast leadership in an age of uncertainty, while Bush noted that his unwavering commitment to peace has inspired generations across the globe.

US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, a long time supporter of Tibetan rights, sent a video message saying, “Your Holiness, you have been a beacon of light and hope not only to the Tibetan people but to humanity at large. On behalf of the US Congress, we honor your life of service and courage.”

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau joined in, offering congratulations and affirming Canada’s support for the Tibetan people’s religious freedom and cultural preservation. “His Holiness’s teachings continue to guide us in a world that deeply needs compassion, wisdom, and tolerance.”

In a written message read during the event, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended greetings on behalf of 1.4 billion Indians, calling the Dalai Lama “an enduring symbol of love, patience, and moral discipline.”

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio also issued a strong statement supporting Tibetan self determination, including the right to freely choose and venerate religious leaders without external interference.

As the clouds slowly lifted over Dharamshala, the celebration carried a tone that was both festive and contemplative. It honored not just a spiritual icon’s milestone birthday, but the unwavering resilience of a people and a culture committed to nonviolence, truth, and dignity — even as the question of succession looms large.

The Dalai Lama, now 90, may have stepped back from global travel, but his voice — steady and compassionate — continues to guide millions through a complex and changing world.
