Jetsun Sherpa Wins National Title, Earns Place on Team USA

Some victories are measured by medals. Others are measured by the dreams they awaken. For Jetsun Sherpa, a young Nepali American karate athlete from New York, her recent success represents both.

At the 2026 USA Karate National Championships, held in Spokane, Washington, from July 16 to 19, Jetsun captured the gold medal in the Under-12 Team Kumite division, a performance that also secured her selection to the USA Junior National Karate Team. She is now set to represent the United States at the 2026 Pan American Karate Championships, scheduled to take place in Costa Rica from August 24 to 30.

Her victory marks a significant milestone not only in her athletic career but also for the Nepali American and Sherpa communities, who have watched her journey with pride and admiration.

Behind every athletic achievement lies years of dedication that spectators rarely see. Championship moments last only minutes, but they are built through countless hours of training, discipline, sacrifice, and perseverance.

Jetsun’s story reflects that reality. She is the daughter of Lhakpa Sherpa, originally from Loding, Solukhumbu, Nepal, and Cheten Sherpa from Pangboche, Solukhumbu. More than two decades ago, her parents left their Himalayan homeland to begin a new life in the United States, carrying with them little more than hope, determination, and the dream of creating greater opportunities for their children.

Like many immigrant families, they worked tirelessly while adapting to a new country, preserving the values of discipline, humility, responsibility, perseverance, and respect that have become the foundation of Jetsun’s character.

Today, those dreams have found expression through their daughter’s accomplishments. Training at Shotojuku Dojo in New York, Jetsun has steadily developed into one of America’s most promising young karate athletes. Guided by dedicated coaches and driven by her own determination, she has consistently excelled at state and national competitions.

Her consistent performances over the past several years earned her a place on the USA Junior National Karate Team, making this year’s national championship the culmination of years of steady progress rather than a single breakthrough.

Away from the dojo, Jetsun is equally committed to academics. She is an outstanding student who also competes in swimming while balancing school, karate training, travel, and family responsibilities. Maintaining excellence in both academics and athletics requires exceptional maturity, discipline, and time management, qualities she has demonstrated throughout her young career.

Reflecting on his daughter’s journey, her father, Lhakpa Sherpa, described the national championship as the product of years of commitment and sacrifice.

“This has not been an easy journey,” he said. “It has taken a tremendous amount of time, effort, responsibility, and sacrifice. Success never comes overnight. It is built slowly through discipline, hard work, and the unwavering support of family and coaches.”

Although proud of her national championship, he believes it is only the beginning.

“Our dream is to see Jetsun represent the United States with pride at international championships. She has earned this opportunity through hard work, and we will continue supporting her every step of the way.”

While any claim that she is the first American-born athlete of Nepali heritage selected to a USA Karate national team would require independent official confirmation, her achievements unquestionably rank among the most significant by a young Nepali American karate athlete in the United States.

As she prepares to wear the colors of Team USA at the Pan American Karate Championships in Costa Rica this August, Jetsun carries with her more than the hopes of a single family.
