UN Secretary General Urges Global Unity and Compassion on Vesak
May 1, 2026
Marking the International Day of Vesak, António Guterres called on the global community to embrace the timeless values of compassion, non violence, and shared humanity, as the world faces rising tensions and deepening divisions.
In his official message, the Secretary General noted that Vesak observed by millions of Buddhists worldwide commemorates the birth, enlightenment, and passing of the Buddha, offering a moment of reflection on teachings that remain profoundly relevant in today’s complex global landscape.
Guterres highlighted that this year’s Vesak comes at a time when humanity is confronted by conflict, polarization, and uncertainty. He stressed that the principles taught by the Buddha can serve as a powerful moral guide in addressing these challenges, encouraging individuals and nations alike to act with compassion, understanding, and a spirit of service.
Reflecting on his 2023 visit to Lumbini, Nepal the birthplace of the Buddha, the UN chief described the experience as deeply meaningful. He said the visit reinforced his belief that the path toward peace and stability lies in embracing the Buddha’s teachings, particularly in a world increasingly marked by division.
Guided by the Buddha’s example, he urged people to summon their shared humanity and work collectively toward building a more peaceful, inclusive, and sustainable future for all.
Concluding his message, the Secretary General extended his warm wishes for Vesak, encouraging people across cultures and nations to reflect on the enduring message of peace and goodwill that the day represents.
