Washington, D.C., June 11, 2026
In a landmark event for the Buddhist community in the United States, the White House hosted a Vesak Celebration on June 11, 2026, bringing together Buddhist religious leaders, government officials, diplomats, and community representatives from around the world to commemorate one of the most sacred observances in Buddhism.
Organized through the cooperation of the White House Faith Office and the International Buddhist Association of America (IBAA), the celebration marked an important recognition of Buddhism’s spiritual, cultural, and humanitarian contributions to American society and the global community.
Vesak, the most significant holy day in the Buddhist calendar, commemorates the three pivotal events in the life of Shakyamuni Buddha: His Birth, Enlightenment, and Parinirvana. Observed by millions of Buddhists worldwide, Vesak serves as a time for reflection on the Buddha’s teachings and the universal values of compassion, wisdom, nonviolence, mindfulness, and peace.
The White House event carried both religious and historical significance. It highlighted the growing presence and contributions of Buddhist communities throughout the United States while reaffirming the importance of interfaith dialogue and mutual respect among diverse religious traditions.

The ceremony was attended by senior monastic leaders representing Theravada, Mahayana, and Vajrayana Buddhist traditions, as well as officials from federal agencies, members of the diplomatic corps, and invited guests from numerous countries.
The program commenced with welcoming remarks from a representative of the White House Faith Office, who expressed appreciation for the opportunity to host the Buddhist community on the occasion of Vesak. The speaker acknowledged the positive contributions that Buddhist communities have made to American society through their commitment to ethical living, community service, and the promotion of peace and understanding.
Following the welcome, Ms. Wangmo Dixey, President of the International Buddhist Association of America, delivered opening remarks emphasizing the significance of celebrating Vesak at the White House. She noted that the event reflected a broader recognition of the values that Buddhism has contributed to humanity for more than twenty-six centuries.
Ms. Dixey emphasized that compassion, wisdom, ethical conduct, and respect for human dignity remain essential principles in addressing many of the challenges facing the modern world. She also highlighted the role of Buddhist communities in fostering harmony, social responsibility, and peaceful coexistence among people of different backgrounds and beliefs.

Representing the President of the United States, Ms. Paula White, Spiritual Adviser to President Donald Trump and liaison for interfaith relations, conveyed greetings and best wishes to Buddhists throughout the United States and around the world on the occasion of Vesak.
In her remarks, she expressed appreciation for Buddhism’s longstanding contributions to society and acknowledged the role Buddhist teachings play in encouraging compassion, peace, and mutual understanding. She further expressed hope that these values would continue to inspire individuals and communities in building a more peaceful and humane world.
One of the most moving moments of the ceremony was the traditional candle-lighting ritual honoring the Buddha. Participants lit candles as a symbol of the light of wisdom and enlightenment that has guided humanity for more than 2,600 years. The ceremony served as a reminder of the Buddha’s teachings on overcoming ignorance, cultivating wisdom, and developing compassion for all living beings.
The gathering then joined in prayers for world peace led by representatives of the three major Buddhist traditions. The prayers reflected a shared aspiration for harmony, understanding, and the alleviation of suffering throughout the world. Despite differences in tradition and practice, participants demonstrated the unity that exists within the global Buddhist community through their common commitment to peace and compassion.
Throughout the program, religious leaders offered reflections on the relevance of Buddhist teachings in contemporary society. Their messages emphasized mindfulness, ethical responsibility, environmental stewardship, social harmony, and the cultivation of compassion in daily life.

The Theravada Buddhist delegation included representatives from Thailand, Sri Lanka, Myanmar, Laos, and Cambodia. The Mahayana tradition was represented by Buddhist leaders from Japan, South Korea, China, Taiwan, and Vietnam, while Vajrayana Buddhism was represented by respected Tibetan Buddhist teachers and practitioners.
Among the notable participants was the Vietnamese Buddhist delegation, represented by the Most Venerable Thích Nguyên Siêu, President of the Executive Council of the Unified Vietnamese American Buddhist Congregation and Abbot of Phật Đà Temple in San Diego, California; the Most Venerable Thích Viên Lý, President of the Executive Council of the Overseas Unified Vietnamese Buddhist Sangha and Abbot of Điều Ngự Temple in California; and Venerable Thích Chúc Đại, Head of the Education Department of the Unified Vietnamese American Buddhist Congregation and Abbot of Giác Sơn Temple in Maryland.
Speaking on behalf of the Mahayana Buddhist tradition, the Most Venerable Thích Nguyên Siêu highlighted the significance of holding a Vesak celebration at the White House, one of the world’s most recognized centers of leadership and governance. He noted that the Buddha’s teachings continue to offer meaningful guidance in addressing many of the challenges facing humanity today, including conflict, social division, environmental degradation, and personal suffering.
He emphasized that compassion, mindfulness, wisdom, and peace remain timeless principles capable of fostering understanding and healing in an increasingly complex world. He also encouraged Buddhists everywhere to continue sharing the Buddha’s message of compassion and awakening for the benefit of all beings.
The program also featured remarks from diplomatic representatives and officials from various embassies and consulates. Speakers expressed appreciation for Buddhism’s role in promoting ethical values, cultural understanding, and peaceful cooperation among nations. Several highlighted the importance of interfaith dialogue and international collaboration in building a more harmonious and stable world.
As the ceremony drew to a close, participants joined together in a collective prayer for world peace, the well-being of all people, and the continued flourishing of the Buddha’s teachings. The atmosphere was one of reverence, gratitude, and hope as attendees reflected on the significance of the occasion.
The event concluded with commemorative photographs and fellowship among participants, providing an opportunity for leaders and guests from diverse backgrounds to strengthen relationships and celebrate shared values.
