New York – May 15, 2025:
The United Nations commemorated the International Day of Vesak on Thursday, May 15, 2025, with a deeply reflective event held at its headquarters, centered around the theme Teachings of Gautama Buddha – a Path to Internal and Global Peace.” The observance brought together diplomats, scholars, and representatives from several Buddhist-majority nations to explore the enduring relevance of the Buddha’s teachings in addressing modern global challenges.

Declared through UN General Assembly Resolution 54/115, the International Day of Vesak is observed annually on the full moon day in May. It marks the birth, enlightenment, and passing away of Lord Buddha, making it the most sacred day in the Buddhist calendar.

At a time when the world faces increasing geopolitical tensions, environmental degradation, and social fragmentation, speakers emphasized how Lord Buddha’s messages of non-violence, compassion, mindfulness, and the interconnectedness of all beings remain more vital than ever. The event underscored the relevance of the Middle PathBuddha’s philosophy of balance and moderation—as a meaningful guide for navigating the extremes of today’s global crises, including polarization, economic inequality, and armed conflicts.

The Permanent Mission of India hosted the panel discussion, with the participation of representatives from Bhutan, Cambodia, Lao PDR, Mongolia, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Thailand, and Vietnam. The discussions highlighted shared cultural and spiritual ties, and focused on how the Buddha’s wisdom can contribute to both internal peace and international harmony.

In his opening remarks, India’s Permanent Representative to the UN reiterated India’s ancient philosophy of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam” – the world is one family, and stressed that sustainable global peace must be built upon a foundation of inner transformation and mutual respect.

The observance of the International Day of Vesak once again served as a powerful reminder of the universal values embodied in the Buddha’s life and teachings. It provided an opportunity for the international community to renew its commitment to peace, tolerance, and sustainable development, guided by the enduring light of the Buddha’s wisdom.
