A Tribute to Professor Robert Thurman

The global Buddhist community, and particularly the Himalayan Buddhist world, mourns the passing of Professor Robert A. F. Thurman, one of the most influential scholars, teachers, authors, and advocates of Tibetan Buddhism in the modern era. Professor Thurman passed away on June 16, 2026, in Woodstock, New York, at the age of 84, leaving behind a remarkable legacy of wisdom, compassion, scholarship, and service.

Known affectionately by many Tibetans and Buddhist practitioners as “Tenzin Bob,” Professor Thurman devoted more than six decades of his life to studying, practicing, preserving, and sharing the profound teachings of Tibetan Buddhism. Through his writings, lectures, translations, and public engagement, he became one of the most respected ambassadors of Himalayan Buddhist culture and philosophy in the Western world.  

Born in New York City in 1941, Thurman’s life took a transformative turn when he encountered Tibetan Buddhism during his travels in India. He became the first Westerner to be ordained as a Tibetan Buddhist monk and dedicated himself to the study of Buddhist philosophy, language, and culture. Although he later returned to lay life, his commitment to the Dharma remained unwavering throughout his life.  

Professor Thurman served as the Jey Tsong Khapa Professor of Indo-Tibetan Buddhist Studies at Columbia University for nearly three decades and held the first endowed chair in Buddhist Studies in the Western world. Through his academic work, he helped establish Tibetan Buddhist studies as a respected field of scholarship and inspired generations of students, researchers, and practitioners.  

Beyond academia, Professor Thurman played a pivotal role in preserving and promoting Tibetan culture through the founding of Tibet House US, a cultural and educational organization dedicated to safeguarding Tibet’s spiritual and artistic heritage. His efforts helped ensure that Tibetan wisdom, literature, and traditions would remain accessible to future generations around the world.  

A prolific author and translator, Professor Thurman wrote, translated, and edited numerous influential works on Buddhism and Tibetan philosophy. His books introduced countless readers to the teachings of compassion, wisdom, emptiness, interdependence, and the Bodhisattva path. Through both scholarly and accessible writings, he demonstrated an extraordinary ability to communicate profound Buddhist ideas in a way that resonated with contemporary audiences.  

Throughout his life, Professor Thurman emphasized that Buddhism was not merely a religion or philosophy but a practical path toward compassion, inner freedom, and the flourishing of humanity. His teachings encouraged people to cultivate wisdom, develop compassion for all sentient beings, and recognize the interconnected nature of life. He consistently advocated for nonviolence, dialogue, education, and the preservation of cultural and spiritual traditions.  

His contribution to the Himalayan Buddhist community cannot be overstated. At a time when Tibetan culture faced unprecedented challenges, Professor Thurman became one of its most dedicated international advocates. He helped bring the voices, teachings, and aspirations of the Tibetan people to global audiences, fostering understanding and appreciation across cultures. His lifelong efforts strengthened the connection between the Himalayan Buddhist world and the broader international community.  

Many students and admirers remember him not only for his immense scholarship but also for his warmth, humor, kindness, and boundless enthusiasm. Whether teaching in a university classroom, speaking at a public event, or engaging in conversation with students, he embodied a rare combination of intellectual brilliance and genuine compassion.  

Professor Robert A. F. Thurman leaves behind an enduring legacy that will continue to inspire future generations. His books, teachings, translations, and tireless dedication to the preservation of Tibetan Buddhism have enriched countless lives around the world. Though he has departed from this world, the wisdom and compassion he shared will continue to illuminate the path for many years to come.

May Professor Robert A. F. Thurman, beloved teacher, scholar, and friend of the Himalayan Buddhist community, be remembered with gratitude and respect. His contributions to the Dharma and to humanity will remain a lasting source of inspiration for generations to come.
