June 30, 2025 — Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has unveiled a major restructuring of the company’s artificial intelligence efforts with the creation of a new division called Meta Superintelligence Labs, according to a memo reported by Bloomberg. This move signals Meta’s aggressive push to catch up in the race for AI dominance.

The newly formed unit will be led by Alexandr Wang, the former CEO of Scale AI, who recently joined Meta in a multibillion-dollar deal. Wang will serve as Chief AI Officer, overseeing the company’s broader AI strategy and research direction. He will be joined by Nat Friedman, former GitHub CEO, who will “partner” with Wang in leading the division.

To fuel its AI leap, Meta has made a wave of strategic hires — 11 new high-profile AI experts from industry-leading organizations, including Anthropic, Google DeepMind, and OpenAI.

Meta has also been making eye-popping compensation offers to attract top AI talent. According to The Verge’s Alex Heath, the offers have reached well into the eight-figure range, underscoring the urgency with which Meta is attempting to revitalize its AI capabilities.

Despite being an early player in AI, Meta has trailed rivals like OpenAI, Google, and Anthropic in developing cutting-edge large language models and AI applications. In recent months, the company has reportedly held acquisition talks with several leading AI startups and labs, including Thinking Machines Lab (founded by Mira Murati), Perplexity, and Safe Superintelligence (co-founded by Ilya Sutskever). However, according to Heath, none of these discussions progressed to formal offers, due to various strategic and internal considerations.

With Meta Superintelligence Labs now at the forefront, Zuckerberg is betting big on reinvigorating Meta’s AI leadership, with new leadership, new talent, and a renewed focus on developing the next generation of artificial general intelligence.
